Mark E. Browning

Mark E. Browning is a distinguished technology executive and retired Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Exelon Corporation, one of the largest energy companies in the United States. With a 35-year legacy in the energy sector, Mark has consistently driven innovation, operational excellence, and strategic alignment across enterprise-scale IT organizations.

At Exelon, he oversaw all IT functions for its six utility companies—Baltimore Gas & Electric (BG&E), Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), PECO, PEPCO, Atlantic City Electric, and Delmarva Power—serving approximately 8.5 million electric and 1.5 million gas customers. His leadership roles spanned from Enterprise Architect to CIO of Exelon Utilities and ultimately Senior Vice President and CIO for the enterprise, where he spearheaded initiatives around standardization, business & IT collaboration, and digital transformation.

Mark’s work helped modernize critical infrastructure, including Smart Grid and Smart Meter technologies, real-time control systems like SCADA and EMS, cybersecurity compliance (NERC CIP), customer engagement platforms, and enterprise architecture. He was also instrumental in advancing Exelon’s IT strategy, project delivery, and performance optimization.

In 2023, Mark was recognized as the Inspire Orbie CIO of the Year for Chicago – Large Enterprise, a prestigious honor highlighting visionary leadership and excellence in technology strategy and execution.

Since retiring, Mark continues to shape the industry as a Strategic Advisor to a portfolio of innovative product and service companies serving the utility sector. His guidance supports technology commercialization, go-to-market strategy, and industry alignment for emerging solutions.

Mark's thought leadership is further reflected in his industry involvement, including roles with EPRI, the ICCS Power & Delivery Utilization Sector Council (as Chairman), UNITE, the DistribuTECH Advisory Board, the Electric Light & Power Executive Conference, and the Energy Central Knowledge Summit.

Mark holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Illinois. Outside of his professional endeavors, he is an avid boater, cyclist, and golfer.
